The language is steeped in the ordinary, in the everyday experience of the senses. Bad theology and crooked philosophy. And the text maybe because of the translation is marred by incredibly long, tedious paragraphs and the tendency of the author to directly insert himself into the text to directly address better still, to interpret and instill into the reader a particular point of view. Maybe it was because this was my first attempt at reading a book on an electronic device, but I found myself not eager to pick it up.

This was for a book club, and it was suggested by a friend who sang high praises of this author.
View all 20 comments. The problem is that Saramago sometimes makes assertions without offering any sort of narrative argumentation i. I didn't like it. This book is smart, don't get me wrong. Text in Spanich; translation by Basillio Losada; numbered pages.
No creases in spine.
Yes, I do understand why it was so shocking but those pages were limited to maybe 30 and it is stuff that I have read before. May contain limited notes, underlining or highlighting that does affect the text. And that's saying a lot because the main character is Jesus Christ, who you'd think would be a pretty dynamic character. Saramago's house in Lanzarote is also open to the public. Again, Saramago is only telling the side of the story that will prove his own point without suggesting even a hint of doubt about his beliefs.

I also couldn't quite figure out why he wrote it--it didn't seem like a book written to encourage or evangeio the believer, nor provoke thought in the atheist. I'd love to know what other people think about this book if they've read it.
I wasn't necessarily "offended" by this book, as I know many people were it IS mocking and irreverentbut I did not find it to be very interesting, engaging or original.

Didn't think the book was great. The story had good pace, the characters were being well developed, but I found myself getting annoyed every time I picked it up. Ultimately, I just found it slow and boring--which, given the content, was surprising to me. It re-envisions the story of Jesus in a way that attempts to reconcile discrepancies between the old and new testament, so it crafts God and Satan into very different characters than those imagined by the Abrahamic religions.
Near the end, Jesus asks God to tell Evahgelio what will happen after the former's death on the cross. Lists with This Book. Jesus on the boat with God and Pastor and c. I also couldn't quite figure out why he wrote it--it didn't seem like a book written to Not for me. Well, it's always risky to rewrite a religious story and I am of the opinion that i I feel very mixed about this book.
After evaangelio of his books, can I say that I appreciate, but do not love, Saramago now? And then I finished the book after a lot of frustration and shouted "Hosanna".
