So Long a Letter French: Ramatoulaye details to Aissatou how she dealt with this betrayal emotionally and how she grew throughout each event in her life. It has heights unknown to love. It's only a short read but I didn't find it interesting enough to read right through.

I found myself empathizing more for her friend, who divorces her husband after he takes a second wife, than for the main character, who remains married for the sake of society and pressure from the community. Raised by her traditional grandparents, she had to struggle even to gain an education, because they did not believe that girls should be taught. Granted, there is value in choosing your battles and accepting the things that you can't change,but there are also things worth fighting for.

This novel was completely in-enjoyable to me, perhaps this is due to my inability to relate to the characters or that I was constantly frustrated with the fate Ramatoulaya brings on herself. Want to Mariaam saving….
